In B2 sector, above St-Laurent’s river direction south shore, new members are installed to accommodate the loads of the new decks. |
Steel plates are also required on diagonals, this photo show the amount of work to bolt those plates to the actual structure. |
Steps to install those plates are: cleaning of existing steel, adjusting the plates, drilling holes in the existing steel structure and bolting.
In Ramp 3, from Montreal to Chateauguay, steel structure is enlarged to accommodate the new bike path. |

There are about 5 to 7 construction joints per span. |
The next step is the post-tensioning of cables in the new deck. |

Directly after the deck removal, bearing pads for the new deck are installed. |
The first four spans, Montreal side, have been installed. |

JULY 2009 |
Steel works are in progress at the steel substructure for the two ramps that carry traffic to and from Chateauguay (ramps 4 and 3).
Deck replacement work started on July 22nd on the Montreal bound ramp from Chateauguay (ramp 4) and is progressing well. |
The first deck section is being removed slowly. |
It is going down to be recycled. |
Iron Workers prepare the steel structure for the reception of the new deck. |
New deck panels are lifted above the structure. |
The first deck panel is ready to be installed. |
The first deck is in place, it will be soon ready to receive the expansion joint. |

Steel works are going on under ramp 4 and 3.
Ramp 4 (from Chateauguay to Montreal) crosses over Ramp 2 (between Montreal and La Prairie). |
This ramp’s configuration requires special work platform installation. |
These works require some lane closures on ramp 2. |
A clearance marker has been erected to control the truck height. |
APRIL 2009 |
Detour roads have to be constructed for the deck replacement on the ramps.
The steps for the construction of a road are the followings: |
Foundation. |
Road pavement. |
Pavement compaction. |
Installation of temporary light poles. |
MARCH 2009 |
Platforms installation under ramps 3 and 4 are almost finished. |
Production of prefabricated panels for the deck replacement continues. |
Reinforced or repaired elements during March are the following: |

FEBRUARY
2009 |
Platforms have been installed under the steel structure of Ramp 4. |
Under the ramps, platforms are installed with boom trucks. |
Platforms are installed over the entire length of Ramp 4. |
Platforms, larger than the bridge, offer a roomy and safe work zone. |
Repairs and reinforcing steel works have started on the steel structure of Ramp 4.
These works will be carried out in the following stages: |
Rivets removal. |
Replacing rivets by bolts. |
Preparing surfaces, by removal of paint and rust. |
Installation of the new plates. |
JANUARY
2009 |
Prefabricated panels, elements of the new deck, are made in a factory. They are stored at the factory before being transported to the work site. |

MAY TO DECEMBER 2008 |
Platforms were being
installed in Sector B1 and on about half of Sector B2.
Steel works in sector B1. |
| |
In Sector B1, platforms are being installed with skylifts. |
| |
For Sector B2, platforms were assembled on the shore. |
| |
Platforms were then transported by boat and lifted under the structure. |
| |
In Sector B2, scaffoldings were erected on each side of the structure to perform work on the trusses. |
| |
Reinforcing gusset plates, by adding new steel plates, is the major work in this area. Lattice bars join in nodes where gusset plates connect them. |
| |
The first operation on the nodes is to remove the rivets and to replace them by bolts. |
| |
Reinforcing plates are fabricated in the shop. |
| |
New reinforcing plates are ready to be installed. |
| |
New plates are added one by one in a predefined order.
