Raising of the Bridge Sections Spanning the Seaway
In 1958-1959, to accomodate ship traffic on the new St. Lawrence Seaway, the St. Lawrence Seaway Authority, a federal government agency, undertook to raise the bridge sections over the Seaway, which was then under construction, and began building new elevated ramps through the Mohawk Territory of Kahnawake. As a result, the provincial and federal governments shared jurisdiction over the bridge.

A Second Bridge (August 1963)

In August 1963, the lanes were twinned. It was felt that the Honoré Mercier Bridge's two existing lanes were inadequate for the constantly increasing traffic, so the Quebec Department of Public Works had a second bridge built downstream of the first.
