History of the Corporation

The Jacques Cartier and Champlain Bridges Incorporated
was established on November 3, 1978, under the Canada Business Corporations Act and was a wholly owned subsidiary of the St. Lawrence Seaway Authority until September 30, 1998. On October 1, 1998, it became a wholly owned subsidiary of the Federal Bridge Corporation Limited, a Crown corporation registered under Part I, Schedule III of the Financial Administration Act.

Effective December 1, 1978, the Corporation assumed responsibility for the management, maintenance and control of the Jacques Cartier and Champlain bridges and a section of the Bonaventure Expressway. This responsibility had formerly been assumed by the National Harbours Board.


On October 1, 1998, the Corporation also assumed responsibility for the federally owned portion of the Honoré Mercier Bridge and for the Melocheville Tunnel. This responsibility had formerly been assumed by the St. Lawrence Seaway Authority.


Management of the Champlain Bridge Ice Control Structure was transferred to the Corporation from Transport Canada on December 2, 1999.
